Sneaky sneaky
This blog posting stemmed from a friend mentioning what his friend had said. I have thought about it for a whole day, and these are my rants based on his Eva theory.
When the Spurs were getting all of the calls during the Suns-Spurs series, it was obvious to everyone. There were bloggers all over that looked at each play and tallied fouls, non-calls, etc. and it was totally obvious that the Spurs were getting almost all of the calls. When everyone complained, the only defense for the league (not FROM the league, the league never addressed it) was that the league would never rig it so that the Spurs would be in the finals again. After all, no one wanted to see more boring basketball. Even more common was the "no one wants to see the Spurs-Pistons series repeat. Blah." So even though the games were clearly one sided, we all KNEW the league would not put the Spurs in the finals or it would be a ratings stinker, and the NBA wouldn't want that. So, that justification was enough for us to drop the idea that the league was fixing it for the Spurs.
What I am proposing is that the league actually wanted the Spurs in the finals all along, regardless of the ratings. Sure, it seems like a ratings stinker but hey, what are they really up against in summertime TV lineups? Have you watched TV lately? Nothing is on! And, the NBA and ABC do not lose any advertising money if no one watches. In the BS report yesterday David Stern said that the NBA is okay even with poor ratings, but the advertisers just get less of their inventory out. The ad dollars have already changed hands. So why in the world would the NBA want the Spurs in the finals? If you actually watched even one quarter of the finals, you would know that Tony Parker and Eva Longoria are getting married in July. They brought it up every 5 minutes. They showed her face after every big play. After every fall to the floor by the driving frenchman (he falls a lot) we saw her wince. ABC and the NBA want Tony Parker and Eva Longoria to be the Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe of our time.
ABC wants Eva Longoria to be the biggest star on TV. Why else would they put her on a smutty show with a bunch of 40 year old has beens that only enhance the beauty of the 20-something latina? The NBA finals were the sacrificial lamb to benefit Eva and her now declining show. Give up a little ratings in the summer with a boring finals, gain a lot on Sunday nights for the rest of the year with trampy housewives. Brilliant. The finals were the pawn to the Desperate Housewives checkmate.
I was listening to Dan Patrick's podcast yesterday and he and Michael Wilbon actually played the "who would you rather be on an island with" game with the desperate housewives ladies. You really think that Disney-owned ESPN would allow Dan Patrick to play that game with an NBA star's fiancee as one of the choices of island mates if it wasn't exactly what ABC wanted all along? Seriously? Imagine Scott Van Pelt playing that game with John Anderson at the Masters over which PGA tour player's wife would be the best island mate. Would that EVER happen?
Two days ago there was an article on the ESPN.com front page that talked about how great Tony Parker's life was because of Eva Longoria. If you watched the series, you know what I am talking about. It was all they talked about.
The East was cupcakes, and the Cavs were at least 50% into the finals when the first round tipped off. Some viewers would tune in just to watch LeBron, so why not have the ability to plug Desperate Housewives every five minutes? How many people said "well, I'll watch now, since at least it won't be another boring series like the Spurs-Pistons from a few years ago. LeBron is there, it will be fun to watch." I said that! All of my buddies said that!
The NBA along with their buddies ABC-Disney-ESPN wanted the Spurs to be in the finals so that it could be a 15 hour Desperate Housewives commercial. ABC wants Eva Longoria to be the biggest TV star of all time. Now it all makes sense. The non-calls on Nash. The suspensions. The 132,948 shots of Eva Longoria. Eva Longoria will make ABC much more money than any NBA finals in the summer ever could. 22 episodes will always trump 7 games.

I Can't believe it just ended!
The Sopranos is over!! I can't believe it!! Oh wait, I have never had HBO and have never watched a minute of the Sopranos. It is interesting to hear all of this talk as an outsider to the show. I think "man, these people wasted a lot of time and I don't feel like I missed anything." It made me realize how little the shows I like really matter. Funny thing is, I will still watch Lost every time it is on because I have to know what happens next. Nothing is worse than being tricked when you know you're being tricked.

Something strange in San Antone
If anyone watched part of the game last night (I wanted to boycott completely, but I watched a bit in hopes that I would see the Spurs get whipped), did you notice the segment that they ran on Popovich meeting Duncan for the first time? It had romantic undertones.
That aside, I am confident that Greg Popovich is one of the best coaches in any sport ever. He is amazing with how he can control a game and a team. I would never want him to coach my Suns because I would be bored to tears, I'm just saying he's great...

A long goodnight
So I slept on the blog for a while. That happens. I hear that it is called the "end of the honeymoon" or something like that. It doesn't matter that no one reads this thing, I should write anyway.
The Suns' season is over and I am bored to pieces. I have not watched an NBA game since the Suns were eliminated. I have half of me that wants to watch to see LeBron play in hopes that he will undress the Spurs for the sham of a team that they are, but I will not support such an idiotic old man (David Stern) and his cronies (Stu Jackson) with my viewership or my time. I think that David Stern is drunk on his own power (a phrase borrowed from the Sports Guy) and, even worse, is out of touch with the fan base. He made some strides when he let Jerry Colangelo tweak the rules to stop the league from choking the life out of what should be a fast paced game, but then allowed the playoffs to be called like the days of yore. Good idea idiot. Get a lot of casual fans excited about the NBA and then give them the same crappy product that turned them away 6 years ago when it really matters. The Suns tore up the regular season and were benefiting from the newer rules to get to the playoffs as a 2 seed in the west, only to find that hip-checking, leg sweeps, and elbows would be welcomed for the "second season". For a guy that is punch drunk with power, he sure missed the boat on how to control what really matters: his refs. Make them call fouls that were fouls all year and you will retain viewers. Otherwise, you just end up with pissed off fans because the game is not being played fairly. When you relax the foul standards, the dirty team will win. So much for being a league that stays away from the thug image.
And another thing... Joey Crawford did get a little out of hand with Tim Duncan. He got hot and let his temper control the situation. However, I think that Tim Duncan was the most despicable type of player during that moment. You want the players to wear ties to show that they are good role models, but you will let them openly taunt authority figures? You don't want kids to think that dressing like a hip-hop icon is okay, but teasing the referees that are supposed to control the game is just fine? I would rather my kids wear a t-shirt than have him heckling his 4th grade teacher. that's just me. Refs get booed and heckled by fans, usually drunk and uneducated ones. If you want your players to show that they are classy, have them display sportsmanlike conduct while on the court. Openly mocking a ref for a call is really low. If my son did it, I would bench him and make him mow the ref's yard. Bad calls happen, but mocking anyone else in front of a live national audience shows that Tim Duncan is not as classy as others might think. He was the first overall pick from his draft. Through a fluke he went to a title contender and has never had to be on a losing team. He has not had to struggle like KG, LeBron, Amare, MJ, or any of the other greats. That is why he always has that look of total incredulity when he is called for a foul. If you were the only athlete to come from the Virgin Islands that was worth anything and were the first overall pick and went to a team where you had David Robinson leading you to a championship so ealry in your career, then had the best coach in all of basketball to micromanage your team to a level that no weaknesses were exploited, wouldn't you feel like you were important enough to mock the refs? Me neither, because I am not a jerk.

Slogging away, not blogging
We are now officially back into the law school grind, three weeks in actually. Working while in law school should be illegal, as long as suicide is still a crime. I see my kids most days of the week. Wednesday and Thursday are the anti weekend for me as I am out of the house from 7:30am till 10:00pm attending school, working, or studying, all the way through. Stacie has a new calling that keeps her very busy, and I am of no help to my dear bride.
The Suns are doing things that will be spoken of for years to come, and I am too busy to really enjoy it. I look forward to the summer because I will get to see my family, watch the suns in the playoffs, and pay enough attention to work to ensure that I have a job when I graduate. I am not, however, looking forward to turning 28 and officially moving from my mid 20s to my late 20s. Stacie is in her late 20s, and she says it is not so bad. Since she turned 28 she has bought a minivan and has become the relief society president. Although I have started down the hair loss path, I have remained fairly immune to the effects of aging. This is displayed by my uncanny ability to get very little sleep and continue to function ably in my responsibilities. Root for me to remain young and spry, despite the passing of years.
